Vintage John Lennon Home
Vintage styled t-shirts seem to be popular these days, and Worn By tees offers a little history lesson with each of their designs.
The vintage t-shirt market is a super competitive one. A quick search of google will net you almost 2 Million results for vintage t-shirts. It's imperative that t-shirt companies venturing into this field do something that makes them stand out from the rest, and it appears that WornBy has done just that.
They research old photographs for cool pictures of pop culture music and news icons wearing unique t-shirt designs. They, then work to recreate the look and feel of that design, while keeping the history of the design closely tied to the new creation.
This particular HOME t-shirt has an interesting history:
John Lennon was introduced to NYC restaurant Home by his secretary. On his first visit, after a few Wild Turkey's, he was given a T-shirt, and liked it so much that he wore it for the back cover photograph of his 1972 Lp "Somewhere in NYC". Home closed in 1976
While it is said that the Home restaurant closed down, I think it's super cool that Worn By was able to recreate the cool t-shirts that they once sold (or gave away) from their establishment.
As a t-shirt buyer, the simple layout of the site allows me to easily scan and see which shirt catches my eye. Once clicking on the t-shirt image, I'm taken to a well written mini-history for the design along with a photograph of the "original". From there I can select a "Men's" or "Women's" styled shirt with the particular design on it and see a larger version of the "recreation". This type of photo layout in combination with well written t-shirt descriptions almost compels my mouse finger to click that "Buy Now" button (which could be a little larger).
While the designs on the website are VERY well done, my only concern would be if there are any intellectual property rights issues with the display of old photographs and the recreation of pre-existing t-shirt designs (albeit that the designs are well out of circulation). You can buy Worn By shirts in a wide variety of offline retail locations throughout Europe and Asia, so I'm guessing they worked out all the legalities on their cool designs :)
If you are a fan of vintage t-shirts, or a fan of music history, you should definitely checkout Worn By T-Shirts. I'm sure you can find something in their archives that will fit in your wardrobe!
