japanese guinea pig
I'm not sure exactly why I like this t-shirt.
I've never owned a guinea-pig (or cavy as they seem to be commonly called). I mean they are cute and all, but they're just not my kind of pet.
Still, there's something about this morumotto shirt from northshoreshirts.com that just says "wear me".
I think it may be the simple line drawing and the katakana writing underneath. A lot of time I like simplicity in my t-shirt designs. That's not to say I don't appreciate designs that are a bit more complex, just that I find myself wearing designs that get straight to the point (whatever that point may be) more often.
The katakana writing reminds me of my brief trip to Japan back in 1995. I went to visit my sister and her family, and I remember how out-of-place I felt on the urban subways of Tokyo. When you're 6'3", it seems you're a bit of an oddity. It wasn't a bad feeling, like I was alienated, it was just weird to be the object of so many people's curiousity.
I keep saying I'm going to go back and visit Japan, now that I'm 10 years older and can appreciate all the cool sites I visited. I want to be able to make it farther up Mount Fuji (a snow storm was coming in, so we had to stay at one of the lower base stations). I want to visit more of the temples with open eyes. I want to buy a beer out of one of the vending machines that lined the streets (mmm...vending machine beer). I want to take my 1 GB memory card, slap it in my 10D and fill 'er up.
Another place I want to revisit is Newmarket, England. I spent 3 years of my life growing up in this small town in Suffolk. I was too young to remember much, but the memories I do have are fond ones. Every year I tell my wife that I want to take her and the kids there to show them the little shops where I used to buy sweets and fish and chips. I'm sure we'll make it there someday.
The whole northshoreshirts shop seems to be centered around the island lifestyle of Hawaii. Me and a buddy of mine took our families to Hawaii for Mother's Day in 2003. My daughter just turned 1 year old, and even though she won't remember the trip, we took enough pictures help recreate some memories for her. Yet another place that I've vowed to revisit.
So I think somehow, this little japanese morumotto guinea pig t-shirt reminds me of some of the places I've traveled; places I want to return to. It's weird how a t-shirt can bring up fond memories just by a simple picture. It's similar to how a particular smell or an old song can bring back vivid memories when you encounter them.
