Boxing Silhoutte Sports
For the longest time I wasn't a fan of the sport of boxing; recent boxing matches, and this t-shirt have turned me completely around though.
I remember as a little kid watching my dad watch boxing on TV late nights on HBO. It was almost as if he was in the sanctioned fight himself. His head, bobbing and weaving in reaction to the punches thrown. When "the fight" was on, you couldn't get through to him though, he was engulfed in the action.
There was one time when I was about 7 and I wanted him to take me to McDonalds to get a cheeseburger and "the fight" had just started. I thought maybe this time might be an exception since we hadn't been out to eat in a loooong time, and McDonald's cheeseburgers were his favorite too. I must have begged and pleaded for the first 3 rounds of that fight, until he final put his foot down and told me to get out of the room. I can't figure out why I never took to the sport :-)
For some reason recently, I find myself watching boxing on HBO whenver I run across it. I'm 28 now, and maybe that's the year that boxing actually starts to grow on you. I guess if it took me 5 years to get used to beer, boxing couldn't be too far behind.
A while back I saw the fight to end all fights. Fernando Vargas vs Oscar De La Hoya. To me, this boxing match was boxing, as a sport, defined. De La Hoya seemed to be "playing the game" from the beginning, wearing out Vargas by allowing Vargas to land punches, seemingly at will. In the later rounds, DeLaHoya literally bounced back and handed down a boxing lesson that Vargas couldn't help but learn. In the after fight interview, there were no "catch phrases" or cliches that you normally hear in sports interviews. De La Hoya was lively, interactive, and even reflective on the fight he had just completed. Watching him wax nostalgic about that fight and prior fights, you would have never imagined that he was getting pounded by what seemed to be a stronger boxer, just minutes earlier.
Give me any good sports match, and I think you can make me a fan pretty easily. Couple that will some cool sports related t-shirts...heck, I'm set for life.
